How to Install Lion OSX

Having hardware trouble after installing Lion OSX? You need to understand that not all hardware will work out of the box. So, you'll need to use Injectors, which basically are modified kexts, so that your hardware might work. Most Ethernet card won't work out of the box, so you need to find out your network card id device number and the injector compatible with it. The same apply to others hardware. Be aware that Intel wireless cards are not compatible with OSX, you might try to replace it with other wireless card compatible with your system and OSX.

If you have any trouble Replacing The Packages files from Lion OSX to the new image.dmg make sure that the new image the you had created has 4.6 GB (DVD-R, DVD-Ram) of size (as is shown in image 2), otherwise it won't let you replace them and you will get an message saying that you don't have enough space available. Always double check the instructions below.

One thing you might want to know before you read or start installing Lion OSX, is that you don't need Mac OSX 10.6.8 to install Lion OSX in a drive, unless you want to upgrade from it. But if you have an empty drive and wants to use it to install Lion OSX, you can do it straight up without having to install Snow leopard OS 10.6.8. The only things you'll need is Lion OSX install in a partition that can boot it up and make sure that the same partition has Chameleon for Lion install, along with some kexts. Nothing Else is needed.

Things you'll need to install Lion operating System in a PC:

- Lion OSX image
- Computer running MAC OSX
- 2 partitions (one save in you desktop for easy access and the other-one for The actual Lion OSX installation.)
- Some Kexts needed to be install in the Installer drive. (Those kexts has to be install in the "Extra Folder" inside Chameleon Only, there's no need for installing them into the "Extensions" Folder in the Mac OSX System)
- PCEFI 10.6 Lion+Snow.pkg
- Chameleon for Lion OSX. (Link to download it is on my forum). By the way, Thanks to all the people that worked in making Chameleon for Lion. Always be support of their work...!
- Again, If you're just upgrading from 10.6.8 to Lion OSX no need to create any new partition, just use the same one that 10.6.8 is using, you won't lose anything!.

The 2 partitions that I had mention above is to use 1 and extract and modify "BaseSystem.dmg" and replace the shortcut from "Packages" for the actual folder. Otherwise you won't be able to modify it. and the second partition is to Transfer all the datas from the modified "BaseSystem.dmg" to a bootable partition. So, basically you will need those 2 partitions o if you prefer, you can use a partition created from your hard drive and a USB pen or portable drive. Whichever way you chose you'll need to create an image and "restore" BaseSystem.dmg and later transfer all those files via restore (again) to a new drive or partition. it might sound complicated but is not, just follow the directions below.

Note: If you're just upgrading from 10.6.8 to Lion OSX you don't need to create a new partition when you're installing Lion OSX, just chose the main partition as the drive you wants to install it. But you might experiences some issues if you have installed modified kexts. that said, if by any chances you're having issues with some hardwares you're better off by installing Lion OSX from a clean install.!

You don't need any patching files thru this installation, Just the bootloaders and some kexts in the Chameleon Bootloader Extra folder.

I had installed "Lion OSX" in a Toshiba L305 and everything works flawlessly: Wireless card (I have Aria Extreme N), Card reader, etc. everything works. FaceTime, Photo Booth.!

Ready to start? just follow the instructions below:

Open "Disk Utility" app and create a new image as shown in images below:

new immage.dmg DVD 4,6 Gb read and write , rename like Lion.dmg

Once it has been saved into your Desktop (for easy access), open the folder where you have a Retail copy of Lion OSX and find InstallESD.dmg -> "Install Mac Os X Lion.app/Contents/ShareSupport" as it's shown below:

Using Disk utility restore BaseSystem.dmg on The New image Lion.dmg (that one you saved in the desktop). The Restoring will change your image name from Lion.dmg to "Mac OS X Base System". rename it again "Lion.dmg" so you won't get confused. (rename it using Finder"

Delete packages link inside /System/installation from the new image (that one you named Lion.dmg) and Copy Packages folder from InstallESD.dmg to Lion.dmg inside /System/Installation/ folder

Install Chameleon and PCEFI on Lion.dmg (Before we restore or transfer Lion.dmg to the partition that will install Lion OSX).

Now is time to restore Lion.dmg (Which you saved in your desktop) and transfer all the files via "Restore" to the Lion OSX Boot drive. You can use either a Portable drive, USB pen or a Partition from your main hard drive. Either way the partition has to be
GUID + HFS+ journaled format and after it's created and formatted name it "Lion OSX boot" or whatever you like. This is only so you can have an idea what steps to take.

after Disk utility finished "Restoring" Lion.dmg (from your desktop) to the partition you had named "Lion OSX boot", you'll need to copy

- Mach Kernel from InstallESD.dmg

Once you have done that, is time to install into "Lion OSX Boot" (that one that will install Lion OSX into your PC)

- Chameleon Bootloader
- PCEFI 10.6 Lion+Snow.pkg

Also you'll need to install a few kexts into the extra folder in Chameleon so that the hardware can work. such as fakesmc.kext, NullCPUPowerManagement.kext, ElliottForceLegacyRTC.kext, AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext, ApplePS2Controller.kext, VoodooBattery.kext, etc. To get my card reader worked I had used " IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext".

I had swap "Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN" for "Aria Extreme N" wireless card and it worked out of the box.

Next step is to create a partition where you wants Lion OSX to be install, or you can create it once Lion OSX is loaded and use "Disk Utility" app from the Installation.

So, Restart you computer and make sure you boot up the partition that has Lion OSX.

I'll post a tutorial of "how to install Lion OSX" for those who doesn't know. Even, I'm uploading the kexts and files needed for it. So, keep checking my blog.

I was trying to compile OSXLion 10.7 using an old version of Xcode (3.2) which of course doesn't work, and I did that because Xcode 4 is buggy on my DV7 running Lion OS. Maybe the reason for that is because my system isn't running with all cores. By the way, in Lion 10.7/ xnu-1699.22.73 apple changed Lapic files by adding/expanded an extra file, which is as follow: "lapic_native.c", "lapic.c", "lapic.h". Also Apple made some changes in the tools to compile XNU, for instance "kextsymboltools", "setsegname" are no longer visible.

Lion requires a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon processor; 2GB of memory; and Snow Leopard. Unlike previous OS upgrades, Lion will be available only via download from the Mac App Store.

All users should download and install the security update from apple. Security Update 2011-003 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. Previous security updates have been incorporated into this security update.

Apple had updated "Xprotect.plist" file in the OSX 10.6.8 seed, which will be release to the public in the incoming weeks. As you can see "OSX.FakeAV.a" has been added to it (See image below):

A little over two weeks have passed since the appearance of MAC Defender, the fake AV solution targeting Mac users. And seeing that the approach had considerable success, it can hardly come as a surprise that attackers chose to replicate it.

This time, the name of the rogue AV is Mac Protector, and according to McAfee, the downloaded Trojan contains two additional packages:
macprotector.pkg (the application),
macProtectorInstallerProgramPostflight.pkg (bash script that launches Mac Protector once it's installed).

As with MAC Defender, the application requires root privileges to get installed, so the user is asked to enter the password.

"Mac Protector is very sophisticated and uses a lot of resources to appear as a real anti-virus app to the user. There are a lot of images and sounds in the package that simulate system scanning, show the alerts, etc," says McAfee. "Mac Protector will perform a fake scan on the system, and will show rootkits and spyware detections for real and current processes."

Here is a Vanilla Kernel 10.6.7 (also knows as xnu-1504.9.37) that has lapic issue fixed (that affect HP's laptops).

Installing or replacing the kernel will give you the option of booting up 64 bit mode.

You need to be aware that when you used any bootloader/distro, this ones comes with some basic kexts which allows the bootloader to boot up with the Operating system and at the same time enable the hardware. Now, the problem happens when you have a bootloader/distro with kexts meant for a specific version of Snow leopard OS and when it try to load a conflict/kernel panic will happen because of incomparability in the system. Most people are not aware of it and that's why when they try to upgrade from one version to another, such KP happened. The bootloader needs to be updated (meaning the kexts inside of it) to the version you are meant to install, again, the incomparability will trigger a kernel panic, which is basically a way to protect your system. Most people have to replace/update some kexts after the installation by using a safe mode feature. If by any reason the system keeps crashing in the installation is because such bootloader is not compatible with that specific system and an alternative can be to trying to replace/remove the kexts inside the bootloader or just look for a compatible one.

To choose a bootloader the first thing you need to find out is if that bootloader is compatible with your motherboard, if it's not, you can forget about that bootloader and try a different one meant for your system.

Some bootloaders/distro are made for laptops only, others for desktop only and others work for both. Also some work for a specific Processor. You need to keep all this thing in mind when choosing a bootloader.

When a new laptop goes to the market and you try to convert it into a hackintosh machine sometimes it takes a while to find the right kexts and even a bootloader to make it work, there is not "Magic Bullets".

My advice is to try others bootloaders until you find the right one and read what others had done to fixed their issues. that's why all of us have done it, sharing with others what we have fixed and experiences.

One more thing, you may find bootloaders that are compatible with your system and not all the hardwares will work but there's others bootloaders that are not only compatible but most of your hardware will work.

there's 2 way to enable hardware in our systems:

1)- using modified kexts which are injectors that enables that specific hardware. When installing a new modified kext or injector make sure is compatible with the version of OSX you have or you will have Kernel panic.

2)- editing your dsdt.aml which is far more complex than installing a injector. There's people that have improved their dsdt.aml and had uploaded to share with those who have the same system, just search the hackintosh forums for those compatible with your system.

Apple had posted the 10.6.6 XNU (also knows as xnu-1504.9.26) today in their open source web site, so I fixed the "Lapic.c" issue and compiled it. you can download it here: 10.6.6 mach_kernel. I have created i386, X84_64 and a Universal Binary Kernel, use whichever you like.

Reminder: If you're planning to update to OSX 10.6.6 and you are using lapic.c fixed kernel, you need to wait until apple's releases XNU in their open source web site. After that I'll compile the xnu and post the link in here.

The big news today is the released Mac OS X 10.6.6’s and also is clearly the Mac App Store, but that’s not the only change that came in the latest version of Snow Leopard. In addition, Apple nipped a pair of bugs and closed a security hole.

Apple notes exactly two fixes in its release notes for 10.6.6: one that fixes a cropping problem with some PostScript printing in landscape mode and another that resolves an issue with ATI graphics card-powered Macs where connecting an external DVI display could yield erratic mouse pointer movement.

In addition, the update patches a single security vulnerability related to the PackageKit system, preventing a man-in-the-middle attack that could force the app to quit or potentially execute arbitrary code.

Apple had posted the 10.6.5 XNU (also knows as xnu-1504.9.17) today in their open source web site, so I fixed the "Lapic.c" issue and compiled it. you can download it here: 10.6.5 mach_kernel. I have created i386, X84_64 and a Universal Binary Kernel, use whichever you like.

The update is 517.3MB through Software Update and Available right now. Apple has posted the Combo download link in their web site. 10.6.5 Combo update

Also, once apple's finish uploading the 10.6.5 XNU I will fix the lapic.c issue and compile for those who don't know how to do it. So, keep checking my blog and forum..!

Rumor has it that today, Wednesday 10, apple will release OSX 10.6.5 to the general public and for those waiting that final had arrived.

For those using HP's laptops and other that have issues with "Lapic.c" file, beware that until the 10.6.5 kernel is fix (for Lapic.c issues) and compile, you won't be able to boot up without "CPUS=". that said, as soon as apple release the 10.6.5 XNU that issue can be resolve. again, You might be able to install the 10.6.5 update but you won't be able to boot up your system unless you use "cpus=" command line.

A lots a people had asked me..If apple is using "Nvidia Geforce 320m" in their laptops, how can mine doesn't work out of the box? Well, the answer is that there are 2 different "Nvidia geforce 320m" graphic cards and the differences between the Nvidia Geforce 320m (which can be found in the Apple MacBook 13" 04/2010 laptops, chipset graphics card) and the Geforce GT 320m (or GT320M which was presented in the HP dv6t and dv7t series) is that The NVIDIA GeForce 320M is an integrated chipset graphics card for Core 2 Duo based laptops and successor of the GeForce 9400M. It does not feature dedicated graphics memory but uses the systems main memory instead (shared memory, in Mac OS X 256 MB from the main memory). Therefore, the performance is not as good as similar cards with dedicated graphics RAM. The mGPU is based on the GT216 core (as the GeForce GT 325M e.g.) and offers all 48 shader cores. The similar called GeForce GT 320M is a dedicated graphics card and a bit faster than the Geforce 320M. that's why is not working out of the box, so in order to enable it you either use a Graphic injector or dsdt editing and even doing so the your system have some issues because is delaying with 1 GB of dedicated memory instead of 256 MB shared memory. Apple had released many Graphics updates since had adapted the Geforce 320m to trying to stabilize the system and even so, many user are dealing with graphic issues. Something remarkable that is worth to mention is what the Hackintosh's community has done and that is to adapted most PC hardwares into a Operating System that is capable of working with them but can not maximize their features because is limited to a similar hardware configuration. Futures updates might help our hachintosh's computer to maximize all those features.

Apple released few days ago a "MacBook Air (Late 2010) Software Update 1.0" This update fixes a few graphics issues including:

Resolves an issue where the system becomes unresponsive while playing back a movie trailer in iMovie.
Resolves an issue where the system becomes unresponsive after waking from sleep when an external display is connected.

If you have issues with your Hackintosh which involved graphic card instability, you might wanted to try it. How to install it? Download the dmg from apple site by clicking here: Macbookair and install it using "Pacifist" application by using your administrator's privilege.

In this released apple has updated ATIRadeon and Geforce graphic kexts. The update is to fix graphic issues in the new Macbook air (Late 2010) which use NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor (256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory, not to be confuse with the 1GB). Also all AppleIntelHDgraphickexts are updated and the Framework (openCL.framework). In order to get this files to work you must have 10.6.4 in your system.

Tip: Try installing this update with a "Clean Install"(starting from scratch) instead of mixing with others updates like Macbook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac.

The installation of this update is irreversible.

After a few adjustments to the dsdt.aml, I ran Geekbenchmark and the system improved a lot better on my HP DV7t, especially in the cpu performance. As it's show image below. (Download Geekbench2.1.7 for Mac or Windows).

Warning: Some patched Kernel can be boot up at 32 bit mode only and not at 64 bit mode, that would create a conflict within the system if you're trying to boot up on 64 bit mode with a 32 bit only kernel. Besides, patched kernel are usually for AMD processor and not for intel processor but you can use them if you have to. The patching is so the OSX can run on the unsupported processor. One more thing, you can not run a system from a patched kernel and later upgrade it with a vanilla kernel (Unmodified). things like this we have to keep in mind before installing it..Unless you have a OSX unsupported processor (such as AMD) there is not reason to use a patched kernel. If you mixed different versions upgrade and the system doesn't work, you might need to start a "Clean install", becuase downgrading a version of OSX CAN NOT BE UNDONE!. Before installing or mixing a different OSX versions do your homework and if that doesn't work start a different approach from a clean install.

You won't know if CE/QI is enabled until your graphic card is working with either Graphic injectors or dsdt editing. How to know if CE/QI is enabled in your computer? well, If you're not able to play "Chess" game for instance or unable to use "Front Row" application, that is the reason. Your Graphic card VRAM has to meet the minimum requirement for CE/QI in order to work.

I'm playing Amnesia "The Dark Descent" game and the graphic is pretty good on my HP DV7t running Snow leopard OS. I got the max resolution for the laptop's screen (1600x900) but when I plugged it to my Sony TV, I get a 1080p resolution on the game. I can switch back and forth from screen to screen and the system is very stable.

Some people have trouble to run Mac OSX in their machine for many reasons, like Motherboard incomparability, graphic card issue, etc. Here are a few more options you can try to run Mac OSX in your pc. Apple had added more hardware support to Snow Leopard OS in the already released OS and also in the incomings. that said, system like iMac, MacMini, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro are using similar hardware configurations to a pc, which means, we can run a more efficient Hackintoshs today. So, here is what you need to do:

Install Snow leopard OS version 10.6.3 and download manually 10.6.4 for imac or MacMini. Once you downloaded the update, install it using "Pacifist" and not directly because is going to say "This software can not be install in this computer" because of different versions comparability. Of course you can change the versions os your system manually opening "System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist", and install the update by tricking it. If you use "Pacifist" all you need to do is use the "Administrator's privileges" as it's describe below. Even, if you already had the same version (update for a different Computer model) installed the same process can be done but you already have files that might not work as is suppose to. I had done it both way and it has worked for me. When you installing the update, pacifist is going to ask you to "replace or update" choose to update, unless you know what you're replacing.

Apply the same method with MacMini update. The whole idea is that is a workaround to every issue. If you're one of those people that haven't not able to run either Dual boot (Windows and Mac) or just Mac OSX in your pc, and wants to give it a try, just follow those steps.

If you're having trouble to install any apple's update because of either version not compatible or any other issue, you need to install and use "Pacifist" which will give you a "Administrator's privileges" to install any dmg into your system. I had used it hundreds of time and is very essential. Now, if you have let's say a "Patched Kernel" the dmg update will say that "the software can't be install in your computer", for those using AMD processors that can be a problem, because the dmg or update was made to run in Vanilla kernel. This application will change that. (For those who doesn't know about it). Download it here: "Pacifist"

By the way, in the image below shows the i7-720qm cpu Family number which is "6" and the cpu extended family which is "30", This information is very important if you want to add your cpu information to Chameleon boot loader.Also you can use "cpu-z" to get more information about your cpu settings. Customizing Chameleon with the right settings will give your computer better performance. every little change will make a big difference in your hackintosh. Because of the Turbo Mode, the CPU is clocked with up to 2.8 GHz (as it shows in the image below) and therefore fast for single core applications like older games. Thanks to the 4 cores (and 8 threads), modern multi-threaded applications also profit from this CPU greatly (altough when using all cores, the clock speed remains low).

Hackintosh running Snow Leopard OS with i7-720QM processor.

The image above shows the different speeds on each core when it load, also known as "Turbo Boost". Multithreading as a widespread programming and execution model allows multiple threads to exist within the context of a single process. These threads share the process' resources but are able to execute independently.

Not sure if your hackintosh has the 32 or 64-bit EFI? You can check your machine’s it by entering the following command in Terminal:

ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi

It will return either: "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64"> or <"EFI32">.

Vanilla Kernel 10.6.4 with Lapic issues fixed

Here is a Vanilla Kernel 10.6.4 that has lapic.c issue fixed (tha't affect HP's laptops), I compiled it using Xcode.

Installing or replacing the kernel will give you the option of booting up 64 bit mode, not with the Legacy kernel which work on 32 bit only. So, the kernel works great same as the Legacy kernel, loading all 4 cores/8 threads but on 64 bit mode.

If you already installed Legacy Kernel, all you have to do is replace the legacy_mach for the new mach_kernel. Also if you want to you can rename the new mach_kernel as "Legacy Kernel" instead and there's nothing else to change but if you replace it as mach_kernel you need to make some changes in the com.apple.boot.plist and replace legacy kernel for mach_kernel. If you're booting up from you HD you also need to replace the Mach Kernel in the preboot.dmg. You need to delete the old Mach_kernel or Legacy Kernel (Patched one) from the system root after installing the new one.

After that you can use: (There is no need to boot flag "Busratio=12" anymore, only the boot flag command below. All your Cores and Threads will load)

Which will boot up on 64 bit mode.

So, here is what you need to do:

If you're starting from scratch.

Install Snow leopard OS and upgrade until you reach 10.6.4 (If you're using retail copy with old version)

Install Chameleon Boot and in the Extra folder (System root) copy the Extra folder files from the BootCD (The My Empire EFI has the updated kexts).

Replace the Mach_kernel from system root. (don't reboot yet)

Go to System/Library/Extension folder and delete "AppleProfileFamily.kext" from there or you will get blue screen after restart. Use Kext Utility to repair permission/ clean cache and reboot after that.

I tested the HP DV7t 3100 using Geekbenchmark and as you can see all 4 cores/Threads are working. I haven't finish fixing the dsdt and the score is not that bad (it can do much better than that). For now the kernel is patched. You must boot up from your HD after patching the kernel, otherwise your bootCD will use the pre-settings and boot cpus=1, unless your bootCD has the kernel patch install and the cpus=1 deleted from the apple.com.boot.plist. you can use also a tool that comes with XCODE program. to use this tool go to Developer>Extras>PreferencePanes>Processor.prepane and install it. see image below where it shows the numbers of cores (4) and threads (8) working on the i7-720QM processor.

• The i7/i5 features a Power Gates enable unused cores to be completely switched off essentially eliminating leakage current from unused cores. This greatly reduces power consumption during both idle and peak loads.

Also shift threads as it needed, like when you use a program and have another one running at the same time, etc. (See image below)

i7-720qm running on Snow Leopard 10.6.4

I managed to load all 4 cores on the i7-720QM (Intel i7-720QM has only 4 cores and 8 Threads), even though I still have some things to be fix (DSDT). First runs 4 Threads and when more processor power is needed the others 4 Threads kicks in. Intel Turbo Boost: is a technology implemented by Intel in certain versions of their Nehalem-based CPUs, including Core i5 and Core i7. Turbo Boost allows dynamically increasing CPU clock-speed on demand. Turbo Boost activates when the operating system requests the highest performance state of the processor. Most refer to this concept as "dynamic overclocking".
When the processor has not reached its thermal and electrical limits and the user's workload demands additional performance, the processor clock frequency will dynamically increase in increments of 133 MHz on short and regular intervals until a thermal or power limit is reached or the maximum speed for the number of active cores is reached. Conversely, when any of the limits are reached or exceeded, the processor frequency will automatically decrease in increments of 133 MHz until the processor is again operating within its limits.

Intel Turbo Boost monitors the current usage of a Core i5 or i7 processor to determine how close the processor is to the maximum thermal design power, or TDP. The TDP is the maximum amount of power the processor is supposed to use. If the Core i5 or i7 processor sees that it is operating well within limits, Turbo Boost kicks in.

Turbo Boost is a dynamic feature. There is no set-in-stone speed which the Core i5 or i7 processor will reach when in Turbo Boost. Turbo Boost operates in 133Mhz increments and will scale up until it either reaches the maximum Turbo Boost allowed (which is determined by the model of processor) or the processor comes close to its maximum TDP. For example, the Core i5 750 has a base clock speed of 2.66GHz but has a maximum Turbo Boost speed of 3.2GHz.

Hp's laptops shows the correct number of cores in the "About this Mac" windows, the reason why all those cores aren't loading is because of the CPUS=1 issue (Which limits all cores from loading) in all i7,i5 insyde bios hp users or issue with "lapic.c". When the kernel is patched, then, the OS can load all the cores, since their are not limited by "CPUS=1". After the patching there is no more reason to use "cpus=" at all in the apple.com.boot.plist.

One big problem for many computers is the cpus=1 issue (HP laptops are especially affected by it). I managed to customized "Empire EFI" with not only 10.6.4 patch but with a updated kexts, SMbios.plist, etc. I wrote step by step by how to fix it on my Forum, so if you're interested login.

I fixed the L3 cache (used to be 768 kb to 6MB)

Also I managed to use Nvidia GT 320M Graphic Card by editing the dsdt (No kext required).

If you have a compatible Laptop and would like to compare dsdt.aml, you're very welcome to do so. I have the update Empire EFI on my Forum.

One thing you need to keep on hands is your hardware configuration and "LSPCI Tools" from osx86 team is a great tool for that. Especially if you're editing your dsdt.dsl, that's one handy tool.

For instance, in the image below is the hardware information of HP DV7t 3100 Series:

Here is what you need to do:

Download and install LSPCI Tools

Then open "Terminal" application located at Applications>Utilities>Terminal.

Once the application is open type the following commands:

lspci (Basic information about your hardware)
lspci -nn (Detail information about your hardware identification, like above image)
lspci -vv
lspci –help

Once you load your hardware information, just place it in the in the correct place. An example is if in ioreg you DO NOT see AppleLPC then you will nedd to also patch this device. Run lspci Tools and look for ISA Bridge device - something like:

00:1f.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation Unknown device [8086:3b03]

So using zhell's DSDT device id trick you can add any device id that exists in the AppleLPC.kext plist. Probably best to go for an id closest to you actual device id. (in this case MBP device id is [8086:3b03] so From the AppleLPC.kext there is device id 033b so my Device (LPCB) now looks like this (in your dsdt.dsl):

Split&Concat... In Internet newsgroups large files often are split into smaller parts since messages can not be of more than a certain size to be able to post them in newsgroups.

For that reason you can find often binary files that are split in parts like filename.mp3.001, filename.mp3.002, filename.mp3.003 etcetera. It is possible to put these parts together using commands in the Terminal yet not everybody is handy with that. That is why I decided to create a small utility with the OS X interface that makes it easy for people to split large files to be uploaded, or to put together split files downloaded from the Internet. Of course, you can also use this program to split or recombine files that are too large e.g. to be put on one CD.

Alternative to Intel 4965AGN Wireless Card

If your Intel Wireless Card isn't working because the lack of kext. There's an alternative out there. I replaced my Intel 4965AGN for Aria Extreme N Mini Card on my Toshiba Satellite L 305 Series and It works out of the box. We all know how frustrated can be using a Hachintosh without Wireless connection, So I thought to share this with you. I bought mine on eBay for $35 bucks brand new (Just google it)

I updated my Toshiba L305 to 10.6.4 new release and my wireless connection were gone, Not longer working. The new update disable the wireless card for some reason, so I re-installed the 10.6.3 version back and the wireless card was recognized out of the box. Until I figure out was is causing the problem, I will stay away from 10.6.4. In the other hand, I updated my HP DV7t 3100 Series and the updated worked perfectly. Since every hardware has different configuration, every issues is different as well in every machine. (Posted on 06/20/10)

Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4 build 10F54 (Beta)

Apple announced the availability of the fourth beta version 10.6.4 update for the operating system Snow Leopard. In the new assembly for the number 10F54 corrected some errors that were observed in the previous assembly. Distribution of beta versions can be downloaded right now, its volume is 576.1 MB.

Recall that in previous builds were seen problems associated with incorrect formatting of text marketing. It is reported that the 10F54 version of all these problems resolved. As before, the developers and this time focused on such aspects as the work of graphic drivers, SMB, USB, Voice Over and VPN.
In previous builds have been resolved issues that could lead to loss of connection with the trackpad, and keyboard. In addition, errors have been eliminated, which is periodically hindered the launch of some applications, a component of Adobe Creative Suite 3.
No unresolved issues 10.6.4 Apple suggests that the update 10.6.4 released within the next 1-2 weeks.

I had installed it on a Toshiba Satellite L 305 Series and a HP DV7t and in both system Improved in performance. Before the installation of the 10.6.4 on the DV7t CT 3100 Series, I had some minor issues and got fixed after the upgrade.

Nvidia Geforce GT 320m ce qi fixed

UPDATE: Since many people are having no results fixing the ce qi issue just with the ATI ATY_init.kext alone, I've decided to upload the following files, which indeed enable ce qi. Also I'm posting step by step "How to install Snow Leopard OS using Empire EFI". Myself and others had tried to using other bootloaders but the results are quite different.(Thank you to Zipforce, NewYorker, angel, Julian and others for their help)

First download both folders and replace everyone of them. I have attached every file so that your ce qi can be fix. Follow the instructions by the book.

"How to install Snow Leopard OS on i7"

Now here is a little tricky, so bear with me.

I did not install Chameleon bootloader (I'm loading it direct from the Empire EFI Disc) after the installation because I got KP after rebooting and I wanted to load the system without using any Flags, neither the "Extra Folder" but is up to you, your choice.

First thing you need to do after installing Snow Leopard OS, is to upgrade from 10.6.0 to 10.6.3 (Do not install any kext until after the upgrade), So I downloaded it from apple's web site (The combo one) and I storage on a portable hard that way I didn't have to wait too long. After the system finished upgrading reboot it. then install/replace the following files to get ce qi working. (I extracted them from MBP update)

The MBP (2010) updated released by apple only update some files of the whole OS that works with Intel i7 Processor. In some folders only the version (Kext) is updated in that released update, in others the whole folder. But the hard part is to update your system with those file, so that your hardware can work. That's why it has to be done Manually.

These files/kexst are working fine on NVidia GeForce GT 320m/330m, we tested in different laptops using Intel i7 Processor.

If you're having trouble running ce qi on Nvidia Geforce 320m and 330m, I had a modify "ATI ATY_init.kext" that fix that issue. So "Front Row"and "Dashboard" works Flawlessly! I've tested the modify kext on both Nvidia Graphic Cards and everything Works great.

How To Jailbreak the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

For those who aren't afraid to void their warranty (don't worry, you can always restore to factory settings with no one the wiser), the new jailbreaking tool called "Spirit" brings that level of freedom to all Apple mobile devices running firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.2. This is also an "untethered" jailbreak, meaning you don't have to plug in your device to your computer every time your reboot it, an issue that plagued similar exploits used in the recent past

Note that this particular jailbreak is what's known by the hacker community as a "userland" jailbreak. That means that it exploits a security weakness in the mobile operating system. Apple tends to quickly patch these holes, once exposed, through software updates. Jailbreak users who don't want to be affected by the soon-to-arrive Apple software update, can go through a procedure to back up something called "SHSH blobs" which allow you to downgrade and re-jailbreak your device if you were to accidentally upgrade. If you want go through this step, there's a tutorial here. Otherwise, just be careful to not upgrade your device when a new software patch is released.

Once you're ready to jailbreak, do the following:

1. Verify you're running the latest version of iTunes (9.1.1) and then sync your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad one last time in order to back it up. The iPad should be running OS 3.2.
2. Download the Spirit jailbreak for Mac or PC. Both are found on the Spirit homepage.

3. Connect the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to your computer using the USB cable.
4. Run the Spirit jailbreak application. (Note: Windows users may need to run the program as an administrator - Right-click on the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator" from the menu. If you still have issues, try running it in compatibility mode as well. Right-click, go to Properties, Compatibility tab, and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Me").

5. Click the "jailbreak" button.

6. The iPad will automatically reboot.
7. Once rebooted, you'll see the "Cydia" application installed on your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad's desktop. From here, you have access to all the unapproved, third-party applications.

That's it!

Your device is now hacked.

Startup your PC and insert Rebel EFI disc.

Next step: as soon as you PC Boots select "Boots options" in there select "CDROM".

Apple's iWork '09 is an excellent investment for Mac users who need a well-designed and easy-to-use productivity suite. Though iWork doesn't offer an integrated business email solution such as Microsoft Outlook, it does include a core group of apps — Keynote, Numbers, and Pages — with plenty of intuitive features like interoperability across apps to make that absence easy to overlook. Apple has significantly updated all three products to enhance and streamline work flow with numerous interface tweaks and feature enhancements. Like previous versions — to calm Windows-to-Mac switcher anxiety — iWork files are fully compatible with its Microsoft Office counterparts.

iWork '09 also introduces iWork.com public beta, a new web service. This fledgling sharing site lets you share documents online, invite viewers who can make comments, and allows for downloads in iWork, Microsoft Office and PDF formats. Sadly, it does not let you edit online, so true online collaboration is unavailable. The beta is free, but Apple gives no word yet on the pricing structure once iWork.com reaches release status.

Set-up and interface
As in the previous iWork instalment, you won't need the latest and greatest Mac to run iWork '09. At minimum, you'll need an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 machine with a 500MHz or better processor, plus a minimum of 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended) running OS X 10.4.11. Installation was seamless in our tests, taking just under 10 minutes.

iWork's appearance hasn't changed much since iWork '08. The minimalist layout and easy to navigate toolbars remain; home and small business users will find the suite accommodating. The iWork '09 toolset still outmatches online solutions (minus collaboration abilities) such as Google Docs and Spreadsheets, Zoho and ThinkFree, so Mac users will have more functionality firepower than the common online offerings. Smart tools in iWork like the Contextual Format Bar in Pages and Keynote's new Magic Move features are the type of things you won't find in online favourites.

Keynote

Past versions of Keynote have always won us over and new features in Keynote '09 only make iWork better. Easy-to-use graphics tools and a variety of animation effects help you make eye-catching presentations, and a slew of new transitions and intuitive animation effects add to this presentation program's appeal.

The new Magic Move tool lets you automatically animate images, graphics and text by choosing from several preset slide transitions. Keynote will automatically resize, rotate and change the position of objects between slides with one of several 3D effects. We especially like the options for text animation, which let you make creative transitions by switching letters from one slide into a new message on the next using unique new visual effects such as Sparkle, Anagram and Swing.

New styles and animations are available for 3D charts in Keynote '09, letting you make graphs with bevelled edges, cylinder shapes and 3D textures. We like that the new build effects use 3D motion to animate your charts, making them more eye-catching, too.

To reduce file size for your presentations, Keynote '09 has implemented a way to optimise video files. Now you can clip your videos to just the segment you want and Keynote trims any unused video frames. You also can easily convert images to slide resolution to trim even more.

Pages

Pages '09 offers feature-rich word processing and layout tools alongside intuitive graphics features to make your projects both easy to make and easy on the eyes. Though not as deep as Microsoft Word for formatting and layout options, Pages now offers even more variety with 40 new templates, including stationary sets and a variety of newsletter designs. Added support for EndNote X2 (sold separately) makes adding bibliographic references to your project extremely easy and new support for MathType 6 (sold separately) makes adding mathematical equations a snap.

New features to Pages '09 include a full-screen view to eliminate distractions while you write. While you work in full-screen, just mouse to the top and left side of your screen to quickly reveal Pages' Contextual Format Bar and a navigation pane. There are several third-party apps available that offer similar distraction-free writing and we were happy to see this feature added to Apple's word processor. While Microsoft Word offers a full-screen reading layout, Apple's use of the black background with mouse-friendly menus only when you want them makes it even more distraction free.

Pages '09 also adds dynamic outlines, letting you collapse and expand your bullet points with the click of your mouse, drag-and-drop topics to anywhere you like and add elements such as images and video. Helpful options, including the ability to collapse outlines to the first line of lengthy topics, make it easy to get to the information you want to modify quickly, keeping your outlines about ideas.

You also can now use data from any Numbers (Apple's spreadsheet app noted below) table directly in Pages. But what makes this feature truly useful is that your table or graph will automatically update in Pages with the click of a button when you update data in the Numbers file.

Numbers

Numbers '09 has now been in the wild for a year and — with several new enhancements adding even more time-saving features — it's obvious Apple has been paying attention to its audience. While it keeps the familiar feel of Microsoft's Excel, Numbers '09 offers much smarter ways of dealing with data, tables and charts. While engineers, accountants and science-related professionals may require some of Excel's more robust tools, those with small businesses or other spreadsheet-related needs will find Numbers '09 easy to work with. New, Apple-designed templates for common spreadsheet needs (such as a check register and savings calculator) are also included giving beginners easy starting points.

Formula writing is even easier with Numbers '09 with added features like colour-coded place holders and plain-language help tags and pop-up menus for commonly used values. Figuring out how to calculate how much to put away for your child's education over the course of time, for example, is made much easier with clearly labelled functions that require only a couple of clicks to include in your spreadsheet.

The function browser in Numbers '09 has also received a much-needed upgrade, now with more than 250 functions, complete with built-in help that explains each function along with examples so you can quickly figure out which ones you need for the project at hand.

New chart options let you combine line, column and area series into a mixed chart letting you create advanced charts with trend lines and error bars. Even more impressive, if the presentation style is different — with animated 3D charts for a Keynote presentation or simple 2D diagrams for printed materials in Pages — all of the data is pulled from the same Numbers file using only a couple of clicks from within each app.

iPhone and iPod Touch OS 4.0 Beta 3 Build 8A260b

Changes in Beta 3:

1- Beta 3 feels significantly more stable than prior beta builds.
2- Things seem to be running much smoother, and even the ability to take screenshots is back (this was missing in Beta 2 for some odd reason).
3- Another annoyances that's resolved with this build is closing out apps in the multitasking "drawer." Instead of having to press-and-hold one app icon at a time to get the little minus symbol.

4- you'll now see all the icons change as soon as you press-and-hold one. Much quicker
5- Orientation Lock. You just tap it once and your screen will not rotate to drive you nuts.Right next to the Orientation Lock you'll also find some basic iPod controls so that you don't have to exit an app to change songs. You can access these features by swiping all the way to the left in the multitasking drawer.

Running Cydia on the ipad

After your ipad is hacked and ready for applications, click on Cydia icon and start installing them.

Cydia hasn’t been updated for the iPad larger screen yet, except for the home screen which contains some advices from Saurik about which apps work, and which don’t. SBSettings works, it’s themable but it doesn’t exactly support landscape mode. The iPad resprings and reboots just fine with it, and toggles work as well. Veency is compatible, and you can check out the screenshot below. It’s also pretty fast. I heard on Twitter that OpenSSH should be working fine too, so I guess you can install it and start browsing your iPad’s file system.

Even if it’s still buggy and far from perfection, Spirit for iPad works and so does Cydia. Multitasking is now possible.

Apple Bluetooth Version 2.3.2f5 (Improved version)

I was recently checking the file inside The MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3 and I noticed that the bluetooth software Version is different than the one I have. The version that I have on Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 is 2.3.2f4 and the one on the MackBook Pro update is 2.3.2f5.

I decide to do a little experiment and try the new BlueTooth version on one of my Laptops. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite L305 S8558 running Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3.
After unpacking the files, I started to change the files manually one by one. Then I repaired The permission and Reboot.

Here is what I've noticed:

- My BlueTooth work better than before, not only has a better range but is more stable. The "BlueTooth Setup Assistant" didn't show any device using the version 2.3.2f4 (Searching for devices - 0 found), while after installed the version 2.3.2f5 shows not only my devices but my neighbors devices as well. I can even "Browse device" on those that I'm connected, again "Something I wasn't able to do before".

- I can run the "BlueTooth File Exchange" more effective and Transfer file between my Hackintosh and my PC. Something that I couldn't do before the update.

- I can connected my Hackintosh with my iPhone via BlueTooth and transfer files, something that I couldn't do before.

- I can connect my headset free Unit (Motorola H721) with my hackintosh via BlueTooth without a problem. I can Listen to iTunes via Bluetooth with absolutely no problem. Wireless Headset works Great!

- I can load "BlueTooth Diagnostic" utility window and see a report of my BlueTooth configuration. I wasn't able to have this information before.

- I can load "BlueTooth Explorer" which allow my to check my devices "Performance (Throughput test, RSSI Sweeper, AFH Monitor), Utilities (Show Device Cache, Get Local Info, etc) and devices.

I made all these changed manually and it worked on my Laptop. If you'd like to try on your system, just download it and replace the files Manually.

The Applications folder Contain:

CoreServices, Extensions, FrameWorks, PreferencePanes, SystemConfiguration, SystemProfiler.

After replacing the files, just run "Repair Permissions" and Re-Boot.

So we know that these new i3/i5/i7s for the most part aren't supported yet by OS X. If you try to install, you'll get an instant reboot.

In order to avoid this, you'll boot using iBoot or whatever Chameleon Boot CD, swap out for the Mac OS X Retail DVD, and press F5, then you type:

busratio= and then your specific CPU's bus/core ratio.

So, for example, the command would be

busratio=23

For a Core i3-540. Simple! But as yet untested on a lot of these.

Getting an iPhone’s UUID number for ad-hoc app deployment

Deploying iPhone applications to testers involves creating an ad-hoc distribution package that they can install through iTunes, rather than the App Store. To do this, you need to get each iPhone’s identifier or UUID code.

There are two steps to this – the first is to get your guinea pig to connect their iPhone and fire up iTunes. Then on the iPhone Summary page, they’ll see their phone’s serial number, like this:

The serial number isn’t the one you’re after – clicking on the Serial Number will flip the display so that it shows the eleventy-billion digit UUID, like this:

Thankfully, you can copy the number even though it looks as if you can’t select it on the screen – just hover the mouse pointer over the number, and Cmd-C / Crtl-C to copy the number onto the clipboard.

CrossOver PRO 8.1 for Mac (Intel Based Only)

The idea behind CrossOver is simple - it's emulation software that uses Wine that allows you to install and run a number of popular Windows applications and games on Mac OS X running Intel CPUs. In theory the software sounds simple to use - you download CrossOver, create a "bottle" (a virtual Windows environment), install the applications and start using it.

In theory, things are a bit different. I won't bore you with the installation suffice to say that it's what I have come to expect from a Mac and pretty straight-forward. I since wasn't supplied with the Mac OS X disc, this presented a bit of a problem. What is eSata?

first, eSata stand for External Serial ATA Interface. Serial ATA is a commonly used interface for internal Hard Drives, and eSATA is an extension of that specification to be used with external devices.

If you’re using a USB or Firewire external drive, what you’re really using is a ATA or Serial ATA hard drive, and an external enclosure. The enclosure has a controller in it which translates the ATA or SATA protocol to USB or Firewire.

This translation causes some delay and there is also some overhead involved in the translations.

eSATA is already in the format that the drive is transmitting. No translation necessary means no lag.

What are the differences of eSATA connectors versus SATA internal connectors?

1. The External connector has no “L” shaped key.

2. The guide features have been changed to prevent the use of unshielded SATA internal cables in external applications and assist the alignment with the mating connector.

3. The insertion depth is increased from 5mm to 6.6mm to provide a more robust interconnect.

4. Full shielding to reduce EMI to provide an ESD path.

5. The contacts are recessed in both the receptacle and plug to prevent ESD damage.

6. Increased durability to 2500 cycles. amount others things.

Here is a list of additions to the SATA specification to support external eSATA:

Sender voltage level increased from 400-600 mV to 500-600 mV to compensate for losses and support longer cables;
Recipient voltage span decreased from 325-600 mV to 240-600 mV to compensate for losses;
Double SATA cable length from 1 to 2 m;
EM shielding of eSATA connectors by means of a small metal cage;
Lock mechanism for eSATA connectors.
Meanwhile, eSATA and SATA connectors are not interchangeable, so you cannot plug a SATA drive to an external eSATA port.

3 reason Why Would you want to use eSATA:

Reason #1 - The transfer rate is fast. I mean really fast. Currently there is a 1.5 Gbps and a 3 Gbps Standard. This blows FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB 2.0 out of the water.

Reason #2 - Less Lag. Since the data is already in a native format, there is no translation involved. This means data gets to the interface faster.

Reason #3 - It isn’t terribly expensive. Maybe this isn’t a reason to use it, but it isn’t much of a road block either. If your motherboard has SATA connectors laying around, you can extend them with a $3 bracket. SATA expansion cards can be found right now for under $30.

What are the differences of eSATA cables versus SATA internal cables?

1. Fully-shielded cable with separation of the outer shielding (for chassis ground) and
signal ground.
2. Hot-plugging supported.
3. Maximum length increased to 2 meters.
4. The external cable electrical parameter requirements are different from internal (xx)

requirements as shown below:

A. Maximum insertion loss (10-4500MHz) 8db (6dB)
B. Maximum rise time (35ps input) 150ps (85ps)
C. Maximum intra-pair skew 20ps (10ps)

Beware of Fake Core i7s!

Intel has confirmed that counterfeits of its Core i7 processors were sold through the North American online retail outlet Newegg.

"Intel has been made aware of the potential for counterfeit i7-920 packages in the marketplace and is working to how many and/or where they are being sold. The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits. Buyers should contact their place of purchase for a replacement and/or should contact their local law enforcement agency if the place of purchase refuses to help."

The hooky Intel goods were first reported by Hard OCP on Friday. One of its forum members posted images of the supposedly new Intel Core i7-920 chip that had been delivered to him after he purchased it through Newegg.

The attention to detail was fairly impressive, if one didn't notice that the "processor" was just an aluminium blank. Another forum member at Overclockers reported the same problem, posting his images of "factory sealed" printed on the box itself underneath a fake factory sealed sticker. Ingenious. But the house of cards crumbled immediately as both forum members reported spelling mistakes on the packaging and blank instruction manuals.

Online retailer NewEgg said late Monday that it has confirmed that a shipment of Core i7s were indeed fake, and that it had broken off its supply relationship with IPEX, the supplier. NewEgg also apologized.
The fake Core i7s surfaced this weekend, and Intel confirmed them on Monday morning. At the time, reports had indicated that the fake processors were in fact so-called "demo units".

By Monday afternoon, NewEgg had rejected that story.

"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com," a spokesman said in a statement.

"Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us 'demo units,' the spokesman added. "We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question."

Intel confirmed again that they had seen the fake Core i7s. "Intel is getting samples to inspect and until then we can say that everything in the package appears fake," a spokesman said in an email late on Monday. "Some of the photos of the processor look like it is a casting and not even a real processor of any kind. Newegg has moved quickly to replace the suspect units."

Again, buyers should contact their point of purchase for a replacement, the Intel spokesman said. (PC Magazine)

Xcode is a suite of tools for developing software on Mac OS X, developed by Apple. Xcode 3.2, the latest major version, is bundled free with Mac OS X v10.6, but is not installed by default. Because version 3.2 is not supported on older Mac OS versions, more dated versions of Xcode are available free from the Apple Developer Connection website.

The main application of the suite is the integrated development environment (IDE), also named Xcode. The Xcode suite also includes most of Apple's developer documentation, and Interface Builder, an application used to construct graphical user interfaces.
The Xcode suite includes a modified version of free software GNU Compiler Collection (GCC, apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1 as well as apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1, with the former being the default), and supports C, C++, Fortran, Objective-C, Objective-C++, Java, AppleScript, Python and Ruby source code with a variety of programming models, including but not limited to Cocoa, Carbon, and Java. Third parties have added support for GNU Pascal,[1] Free Pascal,[2] Ada,[3] C#,[4] Perl,[5] Haskell,[6] and D. The Xcode suite uses GDB as the back-end for its debugger.

There are so many other cool features that I could talk about here. Zero Link and Fix and Continue come to mind. But so far, these are the ten, 'er eleven, things that I've really been enjoying about using Xcode. It definitely represents a major shift in Apple's IDE and I think it will take people a little while to get used to this new tool. It's also different enough than Project Builder and other IDEs that it's going to take a few months to really start getting the hang of how to best utilize it, but there's some serious potential here and I'm really happy to see Apple investing the same kind of attention into the IDE that it put into iTunes, iChat, and the rest of the applications that ship with Mac OS X.

How to repair you Hard drive (Mac OS)

If you have trouble starting your Hackintosh normally, you should use a "Disk repair utility" to fix that problem. Even if you computer start normal you should run this tool to check and fix any possible issue. Sometimes "File system error" may prevent you system to startup and in most cases affect your system. most common issues are; an improper shutdown, forced restart, or
power interruption. So, to prevent any of those issue you should run the disk repair utility.

Disk Utility can repair common disk issues, ranging from corrupt directory entries to files left in unknown states, usually from power outages, forced restarts, or forced application quits. Disk Utility’s Repair Disk feature is excellent at making minor disk repairs to a hard drive’s file system, and it can make most repairs to a hard drive’s directory structure, but it’s no substitute for a good backup strategy. The Repair Disk feature is not as robust as some third-party applications that do a better job of repairing hard drives as well as recovering files, something Repair Disk is not designed to do.

In the event that your Hackintosh wont start and you want to repair your hard drive just follow this simple steps:(If you like to repair your hard drive from your computer menu, just Launch Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/).

First startup your computer using your Boot-loader program, after that insert your Mac OS disc, as if you're going to install the OS.

From the Install Menu choose "Disk Utility":

Once there in the left Select your hard drive and select "First Aid" Tab. after that select "Repair Disk" and in the small bar right below, it will show you how long it will take to repair your hard drive.

Repair disk permissions:

Mac OS X uses permissions to determine which users and groups can access or change saved files. This allows Mac OS X, as a multi-user operating system, to maintain clear separation between files owned by one user or another. This separation provides security. It also helps system reliability and stability, because even administrator-level users have to make a choice to modify or delete system files.
From time to time, the permissions on your disk drive may become incorrect. This happens most often after a software installation -- either from Apple software or a third-party package. The folders and files whose permissions are incorrect are generally part of the operating system, and do not directly affect the document files you have saved. Because the incorrect permissions can affect both the security and reliability of your computer, we recommend you repair the disk permissions after every new software installation.
The Disk Utility application provides you with a way to repair the disk permissions. This can take a few minutes or more, and you can perform other tasks while the repair process runs.

Disk Utility’s Repair Disk Permissions feature is designed to restore file or folder permissions to the state the OS and applications expect them to be in. Permissions are flags set for each item in the file system. They define whether an item can be read, written to, or executed. Permissions are initially set when an application or group of files are installed. The installation includes a .bom (Bill of Materials) file that lists all the files that were installed, and what their permissions should be set to. Repair Disk Permissions uses the .bom file to verify and repair permission issues.

What You Need

Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/.
Ten minutes to an hour of your time, depending on which First Aid tools you will be using.

Verify or Repair? Disk Utility gives you two options: Verify and Repair. When you verify, the utility checks for problems but doesn’t make any repairs, even if problems are found. This can be useful if you’re not yet sure you want to risk modifying your disk (perhaps because you want a chance to back up your data first, just in case).

Choose Your Medicine Now decide whether you need to run Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk. They are quite different, so you may want to run both.

Repair Disk Permissions fixes faulty permissions settings for all files installed by OS X’s Installer utility. OS X uses Unix permissions settings to determine your read and write access to files. If programs or documents won’t open or are acting oddly, a permissions problem is often the culprit. You can repair disk permissions only on disks with OS X installed.

On the other hand, you can run Repair Disk on any volume, even one without OS X installed. This tool attempts to repair problems in a disk’s directory, which keeps track of where everything on the disk is stored. This kind of repair can fix almost any ailment, from an inability to open a document to a complete failure to start up.

If you selected Repair Disk, and Disk Utility claims to have found errors but fixed them, select Repair Disk again, just to make sure. If Disk Utility finds errors it can’t fix, you’ll need a more powerful repair utility, such as Alsoft’s DiskWarrior or Micromat’s TechTool Pro (see “The Mac Medicine Cabinet”). From MacWorld.

Which processor should I buy? INTEL or AMD

That's a question that most people ask when they are shopping for a computer. Some people have no knowledge of computer and they end up buying something that they didn't need it. Now, nobody wants to throw away their money buying something that they don't need or something that is going to give them a very hard time. With today's technology computer has become not only faster but easy to use. The battle between AMD vs. Intel intensifies on as processors become inexpensive and better. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) processor runs on a 64nm and 90nm process nodes whereas Intel runs on a smaller 45nm node.

When it comes to building a Hackintosh computer you want to go with the processor with less trouble. AMD is cheaper but that doesn't mean "Quality" and less trouble. When you try to install Snow leopard OS into a PC Computer, you want to use a processor with less trouble. Today you can find a program (also call "Distribution or distro) that allows you to install Mac OS in a PC computer but no every system is complete compatible or trouble free, especially when it came to the main part which is the processor. some of those distros are "iATKOS 5i 10.5.5, iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5, Chameleon-2.0-RC2, etc. and also "Rebel EF" made by Psystar (They went into a big trouble not only with Apple but also with the Hackintosh community for selling Rebel EFI which contain some open source code). I used "Rebel EFI" to install Snow Leopard OS and the whole process went pretty smooth but you have to remember that Rebel EFI doesn't work with AMD Processor. I've installed Snow leopard on some computers that runs on AMD processors and it was so frustrating. I have a much better experiences installing Mac OS on a computer running Intel processor than AMD processor. Is a matter of choice, I guess, But if you ask me I will go with Intel processor. Even running Windows OS I have some many problems running applications on AMD processors, that doesn't mean the Intel doesn't have problems but is less problematic than AMD processor, No wonder INTEL is more expensive.

You can go and read in The hackintosh communities forums and you'll see how frustrating and confusing is for some people to build their own hackintosh computer. Not only because of the lack of hardware support but also because everybody use a different system.

I would never buy a Computer that runs on AMD processor, not even running Windows OS. I just don't see the point of wasting my money on something that won't give me what I want, But again, It's just my opinion.

Building a hackintosh computer can frustrate people since there are not too many places for support. As a reference we most use the hackintosh community for support.

When you install Snow Leopard OS in a computer running Intel processor Most hardware works out the box (Not all of them), some need a kext (driver) to work. So, before start thinking about building a hackintosh computer you MUST do your Homework first.

To me the choice is very clear "Intel processor" are a Better and faster processor but at the end of the day the choice is yours. I would rather save more money and buying a better computer than just something that is going to give me a "Headaches" . You don't have to take my work for it, just try to build it and you'll see for yourself.

Inter processors have the advantage of being completely compatible with Mac OS and with AMD processors you'll need a program the will patch the computer's BIOS in order to run Mac OS. So you don't have to be a "rocket scientist" to notice the differences. But again, is up to you!

Why apple picked Intel over AMD? The reason, industry analysts say, is that apple has a clear goal in mind: innovative designs. And such designs require the lowest-voltage chips.

In m opinion also Because of the processor performance and quality!

spend a few Dollars more and have a better Hackintosh computer.

Great Utility Tool you should have in you Hackintosh.

Kext Utility provide the next operations:

1)- Install kext files.

2)- Repair kexts permissions for system's and Extra folders

3)- Pack kext files to mkext cache file.

4)- UnPack mkext cache files. Note: The utility uses a modified widely applied fast method repairing of all (non/standart) kexts with little improvements.

Note that to run "Disk Utility" when you have enough time is the best way for repair all standart kext.

People eager to get a copy of the latest version of the Mac operating system, Snow Leopard, should be wary of sites offering free copies because they are likely to get some nasty malware instead, according to antivirus company Trend Micro.

Trend Micro said in a blog posting on Wednesday that it had discovered several fake Snow Leopard download sites that serve up a DNS (domain name system) changer Trojan dubbed OSX_JAHLAV.K instead.

You're better off by buying a retail copy of Snow leopard OS (Only $29) instated of downloading something that you have absolutely no idea what it has inside. Thousands of web sites are offering a free Snow leopard OS download but in most cases it comes with "Trojans and Malware".

If you're going to install Mac OS into a PC but aware that not all features and hardware are complete compatible with the operating system. Building a "Hackintosh" is not complicated as it sound but it can be a little stressful sometimes. Specially if you're not a costume to deal with Mac OS. When you compare how much money you will spend by building a Hackintosh computer against buying a original Mac, you're better off, with the hackintosh. for example the Macbook has only 2GB DDR3 memory and for that price you can get a PC with more GHz and Memory. The only challenge of creating your own hackintosh is to find the hardware support necessary but with some research you can find them. So, don't get discourage.

How to Install Snow Leopard in a "Portable Hard Drive"

One of the advantages of Snow Leopard OS (MacOS) is that it can be install on a flash drive, Hard drive, Portable hard drive etc. As long as the device has enough capacity. In the other hand, you can't install windows OS other place than a Hard drive. Some people don't have enough capacity in their hard drive and this installation will give them a different choice. The same technique can be use to install it into a Flash drive and others devices.

You can load the OS by just plugging the Portable hard drive into the Computer USB port and loading it with a bootloader program. I used Rebel EFI to install and to load it.

Just follow the instructions below:

Things You Will Need to install Snow Leopard in a PC.

Blank CD or DVD
Retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD
Internet Connection
Rebel EFI or bootloader program Compatible with your Computer. (Bios and hardware)
Portable Hard drive.

NOTE: Rebel EFI only supports SATA Optical Drives. The use of an IDE drive may prevent the computer from reading the Rebel EFI CD.

First you will need is the Bootloader program. You can download it and after Burn The .iso with a Burn Disc Image software like Nero, DVD rip and burn, Roxio, Magicdisc, etc.

Start your computer and insert Rebel EFI disc. Remember to plugging your Portable Hard drive into your USB port.

as soon as you PC Boots select "Boots options" in there select "CDROM" and just follow the prompt.

"Attempting to eject CDROM" Window will show. When prompted, Eject the CD.

Next: "Please insect Mac OS x DVD".

"Please wait while the installation is initialized". Next step:

Select Main Language, after that Click "Continue", if you want to continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

Next step: Click Agree, if you agree.

after that Select the hard drive that you want to install Snow Leopard OS on.

At this point you will need to Format your portable hard drive. Click on Utilities on the tool bar, then select Disk Utilities.
On the left you should see your hard drive.
If not, a disk is not connected or cannot be read by your computer.
After selecting your hard drive click on Partition.
Under Volume Scheme, click current and select 1 partition.
Under Volume Information, name your hard drive.
Format: Free Space
Click Apply
Click Partition
After selecting your hard drive click on Partition.
Under Volume Scheme, click current and select 1 partition.
Under Volume Information, name your hard drive.
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
At the bottom of the window Click on the Options Button.
Select the GUID Partition Table
Click OK
Click Apply
Click Partition
Quit Disk Utilities

After that Select your Portable hard drive, click on "Install".

When installation is completed restart your PC. Don't worry if you see a "Installation Failed" after the installation has finished, Just restart your PC. That will not interfere with the installation of the software.
When you PC restarts make sure to select "CDROM" from the boot options.

Once CD loads you will see your computer Hard drive, your Potable hard drive, and the Rebel EFI CD icons.

-Use the arrow keys to highlight the Portable Hard Drive (or the drive where you installed the OS).
-Press Enter to boot the drive.
-Follow the on-screen authentication procedure. (Welcome Screen)

after that Select: Your keyboard, then Select, Do not transfer my information now, then If, you have an Apple ID enter it now.

next window:Enter your Registration Information.

Next: Select if you want to try MobileMe Free.

Next: select your region

and That's it....Finish!

The last thing you will need to do is to install the kext/driver compatible with your hardware. Not every hardware will work out of the box and in that case you'll need to do some research on which kext/drive is compatible with your hardware.

Have you try "VoodooHDA.kext"? It works for most Sound cards. Here is the Link: VoodooHDA.Kext

You can install it using KextHelper ..Here is the Link: KextHelperb7.pkg.zip..Drop files on its icon or on the open application.

Notice: some PC require "VoodooHDA.prefPane" to be install into the system/library/PreferencePanes Folder...you will find that file inside VoodooHDA-0.2.2. Folder. First try it without it.

If you know exactly what type of "Sound Card" you have, just look for the right kext on my kexts blog.

BACKUP your Hard drive (Using the Time Machine) Before Installing a new Kext/drive..Use it on your OWN RISK!

Is very Important for you to know what type of hardware you system has, otherwise it would be very difficult for you to resolve a hardware problem. So, double check your hardware before installing a new kext or check the forum from someone who already has resolved a similar problem. Every computer is different not only in the type processor but also the configuration. Always do your research and browse for solutions. When it came to Computers always remember their are machines and sometimes it can be frustrated.

No Disc Found? (Installing Snow Leopard OS)

This issue can occur on systems that do not have a GUID formatted disk, or that had a previous instillation of another operating system on the internal hardBold text disk. The disk must be formatted as a GUID volume and ALL DATA ON THE DISK WILL BE LOST. The procedure to do this and convert your disk to one ready for the Mac OS are as follows:
Click on Utilities on the tool bar, then select Disk Utilities.
On the left you should see your hard drive.
If not, a disk is not connected or cannot be read by your computer.
After selecting your hard drive click on Partition.
Under Volume Scheme, click current and select 1 partition.
Under Volume Information, name your hard drive.
Format: Free Space
Click Apply
Click Partition
After selecting your hard drive click on Partition.
Under Volume Scheme, click current and select 1 partition.
Under Volume Information, name your hard drive.
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
At the bottom of the window Click on the Options Button.
Select the GUID Partition Table
Click OK
Click Apply
Click Partition
Quit Disk Utilities

"Dual Boots"....if you'd like your PC to have install "Snow Leopard OS" and "Windows 7" make sure to select 2 partitions instead of 1. the first one Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the second one Format: DOS Fat. you can use it later to install Windows 7. If you have only 1 hard drive you can split it. If you have 2 hard drives, you can do it one at the time.

If your Battery doesn't show in the Menu Bar....

you might want to Install a "Battery Pkg." and it will fix the issue. After you Installer it, just restart your Laptop and it will show in the Menu Bar.....battery.pkg.zip

What is KEXT?
KEXT stands for Kernel Extension, this means that whatever needs to run in the kernel (OS core) environment can be written as extension and then loaded, even after the OSX has finished loading, this mostly answer the needs for hardware drivers.

Where are kext located?
kext are not files rather a folder (disguised as a file),

File extension KEXT description:
A .kext file is a kernel extension. They're generally used for device drivers and other things that need to modify the system at the lowest level. They're not the same as classic Mac OS extensions, as many of the things that classic Mac OS extensions did are done differently in Mac OS X.
Since kernel extensions aren't protected by Mac OS X's memory protection, developers are encouraged to stay away from writing them unless they absolutely have to. Even then, Mac OS X can dynamically load them, so chances are you'd rarely have to add anything to Mac OS X's Extensions folder.
Leopard holds kext files/folders in the /System/Library/Extensions folder,
at boot time the relevant kext are uploaded from Extensions.mkext this is a cache folder that contains kext related to the installed hardware,

you can delete it, if Leopard can't find it, it will create it again,

you can also state to rebuild it from darwin prompt at boot time using the switch -f see this post for further information.

How to Load and UnLoad Kext?
Kext can be loaded and unloaded during runtime using the kextload and kextunload command lines.

in order to load kext, from terminal write:
sudo kextload kextName (where kextName stands for the kext name you want to load)
enter your password and press enter
the system should reply with a success or fail message.
see the manual page for this command

in order to unload kext, from terminal write:
sudo kextunload kextName (where kextName stands for the kext name you want to unload)
enter your password and press enter
the system should reply with a success or fail message.

you can also check the load status of your kext using kextstat, from terminal write:
sudo kextstat
the system will display a list of loaded kext and details on it

How to Install a new Kext?
there is an easier method (not appropriate for all kext installs but works for 99% of them),
it is a little utility named KextHelper and it can be download here: KextHelperb7.pkg.zip....Drop files on its icon or on the open application.

Remember to BACKUP your system before installing a new Kext.

what is Disabler.kext?

Since first running 10.5 on PCs, we noticed a new kernel extension which would create a little havoc with many PCs - AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement. The basic purpose of this kext to to help managing the CPU state with its voltage and frequencies via the thermal zones that are set up for it. However, the timer which is specifically uses is HPET, a much more optimized and effective timer compared to the RTC and 8254 timers which are commonly preferred as of now in PCs. Though Windows is starting to take advantage of HPET from what I've read recently. HPET also never needs to use the CPU's time stamp counter, which is an advantage of freeing up the CPU a little more.

What is AppleDecrypt.kext?

Apple uses an AES encryption scheme with a few of the binaries in their software - Dock, Finder, loginwindow, SystemUIServer, mds, ATSServer, translate and translated for rosetta. Google them if you don't know their purposes. On regular Mac computers these are decrypted via the SMC included in the computer, and is used as a (very weak imo) implementation of making sure that only Apple computers run OS X. I can tell you that many people who use boot-132 CDs find out they forgot to include a copy of dsmos.kext or AppleDecrypt.kext when they attempt to run the OS and when they finally get to the GUI screen, nothing start up. That's because loginwindow is segfaulting.

Basically AppleDecrypt.kext is one of the 3 common kexts used to execute dsmos_page_transform_hook and return the 2 32 byte values that is needed to completely decrypt the binary. What these kexts do is they are a replacement for the vanilla kext that gets installed with system version updates, called "Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext" - its difference is they perform the same purpose but returns the known decryption key itself. Without overriding this, you wouldn't be able to use the OS, or at least the GUI end, as it is only used with a minimal list of binaries. (-nawcom).

What is a vanilla compatible system ?

A vanilla compatible system is a computer capable of running OSx86 with minimal modifications (no patched kernel, compatible with Apple software updates). You have a vanilla capable system if: you have a Core 2 based processor

What is DSDT ?

DSDT is a part of ACPI. Actually DSDT tells OS how to interract with the hardware (simplified way of telling it). OSX has an incomplete ACPI implementation which supports only a subset of DSDT. By replacing DSDT we can declare essentially the same interface but in the way that OSX understands. This potentially can solve nearly any ACPI-related problem (except if OSX bypasses ACPI). Other usage case is emulating by the means of DSDT features or hardware components not present on your system. But this is limited to devices that use ACPI.

ACPI defines a large number of tables that provide the interface between an ACPI-compliant operating system and system firmware. These allow description of system hardware in a platform-independent manner, and are presented as either fixed formatted data structures or in ACPI Machine Language (AML). The main AML table is the DSDT (differentiated system description table).
The Root System Description Pointer is located in a platform-dependent manner, and describes the rest of the tables.

Q. What is EFI emulation ?

Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware.. EFI is basically the “BIOS” of a Mac. For a computer to be properly recognized as a mac and to have the most compatibility it must have EFI. The problem here is that PCs do not have EFI.Developers have counteracted this problem by using EFI emulation which enables basic EFI function calls through a specially modified bootloader. EFI distributions for OSx86 include PC_EFI and Chameleon. Nearly all OSx86 installs have some form of EFI emulation installed, so this is not necessarily something to worry about. EFI emulation is required to use vanilla (unpatched) kernels and kexts, and to use GUID partition maps and EFI strings.

DFE's IntelCPUPM disabler. NullCPUPowerManagement is an XNU kernel extension for use with OS X to prevent a kernel panic caused by incorrectly configured HPET devices on generic x86 hardware. Note, this extension overrides the CPU power management functionality making the CPU run at full throttle all the time. Thank you Dave for coming up with this idea...patching sucks. Note, this extension does no detection and blatantly forces the RTC length to 2 bytes, which should be the correct value on x86 systems.

My own hackintosh!

I have build a several hackintosh PC and the process can be quite challenger. The first step to build up your own hackintosh is find a compatible PC and a bootlaoder program that works with it. Once you have decide which bootloader program is compatible with your system, you can take the next step, which is, start installing Mac OS into a PC. Intel Processors are more compatible and less complicate than AMD processors.

I used "Rebel EFI" Bootloader to install Snow Leopard OS on my computers and the whole process went pretty easy. In fact, the installation was the easy part. The difficult part of installing Mac OS into a PC is the comparability or support of Kext/driver. Once you have installed The OS into your Hackintosh your next step is to find kexts/drivers compatible with your hardware. some system hardware works right out the box, some don't, and there is where you have to spend time looking for support. You most be aware that not every PC feature is support by Mac OS.

is worth it? In my opinion it is.

My Computers runs on dual Boots (Snow Leopard OS and Windows 7) and it's pretty cool to switch from one system to the other.

For some of us the experience of having a "Hackintosh" can be a little frustrated since we have to spend a lot of time searching for compatible kexts/drivers. all that experience depends on the Machine you are trying to install the OS. The older your PC the hard it is. Snow leopard OS can be install Only on Intel Processors (AMD processors need a Patch to install it).

Installation can be a "Pain in the neck" sometimes, so you need to have patience. After all you're dealing with a machine.
